Solar power is free, but it is not reliably available on demand. A cloudy day, a short winter day or an incorrectly positioned panel can quickly upset the energy balance. Anyone who wants to operate their cabin/lodge truly off-grid needs not only a reliable and powerful battery, but also a solution that can reliably compensate for fluctuations in solar irradiation.

 

Matching solar panel output and battery capacity correctly

 

How much solar power a cabin/lodge needs depends on two factors: the daily energy requirement and the number of sunlight hours actually available. Not the theoretical figure, but the realistic one depending on location and season.
As a rule of thumb, the panel output should be sized to cover the daily energy requirement even on days with limited solar irradiation, not just on sunny days. This is where the MPPT controller comes into play.

Rule of thumb: PV output (Wp) = daily consumption (Wh) ÷ (sunlight hours × system efficiency). What the MPPT controller does

 

An MPPT controller (Maximum Power Point Tracking) continuously searches for the point at which the solar panel delivers maximum power and adjusts the voltage and current accordingly – in other words, it ensures the optimum setting.This is particularly noticeable under changing light conditions. In cloudy weather or when the sun is low, an MPPT controller extracts noticeably more power from the panel than a simpler type of controller.

 

For lithium batteries, this offers a double advantage: the Traction Bull Bloc Lithium continues to accept high charging currents until shortly before it is fully charged, allowing an MPPT controller to make optimum use of the available solar power instead of leaving it unused.

For days with little sunlight, a capacity reserve beyond the basic daily energy requirement is recommended. This ensures that the cabin/lodge remains supplied with power even after several consecutive cloudy days, without requiring immediate recharging.
