Getting your motorcycle ready for the new season

The battery, which has hopefully been stored under cool, dry conditions in your garage or cellar for the winter (at between 0° and +25°C) can now be detached from the charger with its charge retention function. After the battery has been installed, first the positive, then the negative cables are attached. The terminals should then be coated with Banner terminal grease or terminal protection spray. Please note: The ventilation tube must not be bent during insertion (this does not apply to Bike Bull AGM, GEL and AGM PRO batteries). Now your bike is ready to hit the ground running for your first trip – VROOOM, sounds good!

All information here applies for the entire two-wheeled range, that is, motorcycles and the increasingly stronger market segments for mopeds and scooters.

Accucharger 3A

Charging motorcycle batteries – how to do it properly with the Banner Accucharger.

Ideally, you should use voltage-regulated chargers from the Banner Accucharger series. These charging devices are fully automatic. Depending on the battery capacity, you can use the following chargers:

  • Batteries < 9 Ah - Banner Accucharger 6/12V 2A
  • Batteries 9 - 20 Ah – Banner Accucharger 12V 3A
  • Batteries > 20 Ah – Banner Accucharger 12V 6A Recovery

If the battery has been „left“ on the motorcycle, please observe the following checklist:

  • Remove the battery from the vehicle and/or disconnect the battery cables (disconnect the negative terminal first).
  • Caution: Without a power supply, data in the on-board computer, radio, …may be lost.
  • Before charging, check the electrolyte level and, if necessary, top up with demineralised or distilled water (not possible or necessary with Bike Bull AGMGEL and AGM PRO batteries).
  • The battery screw connectors must not be left open during charging. It is best to close them again (this does not apply to Bike Bull AGM, GEL and AGM PRO batteries).
  • First connect the charger to the battery and then switch it on. Connect the positive terminal (+) of the battery to the (+) terminal of the charger and the negative terminal (-) to the (-) terminal of the charger.
  • After charging, first switch off the charger then disconnect the battery.
  • We recommend a charging current of approx. one-tenth of the capacity (e.g. 30Ah: 10 = 3 A charging current). With automatic chargers like the Banner Accucharger, this setting is performed automatically.
  • If a temperature of +55°C is exceeded, you must stop charging the battery.
  • The battery is fully charged when the current drops to 0 or no longer decreases or the automatic charger switches off itself.
  • After charging, check the electrolyte level and, if necessary, top up with demineralised or distilled water (not possible or necessary with Bike Bull AGM, GEL and AGM PRO batteries).
The screw connections on AGM, GEL and AGM PRO batteries must never be opened!
It is not possible or necessary to measure the acid density or refill with distilled water!
  • Reinstall the battery in the vehicle and/or connect the battery cable now (connect the negative terminal last).
  • Ensure that the area is well ventilated! During charging, an explosive oxygen-hydrogen mix can form. Smoking, naked flames and sparking must be avoided!

Banner tip

Caution: Never install a maintenance-free battery (Bike Bull AGM, GEL, AGM PRO) in a motorcycle without a regulator – do not exceed the max. charging voltage of 14.8V.

Batterietester BBT-DBA

Maintenance: Perform the maintenance and inspection tasks at intervals of approx. 3 months. Never leave the battery discharged. Keep the battery clean and dry, make sure the terminals are firmly seated and lubricate them.

Storage: Remove the battery and store it in a cool (frost-free), dry place when not in use and during longer idle periods (standing or winterisation period). The battery must be connected to a charge retention device (e.g. Banner Accucharger).

Operating instructions: Along with these tips, make sure to follow the operating instructions provided by the manufacturers of the vehicle and charger.
