Which lithium battery is right for my motorhome?

Calculate instead of guessing.

Caravaning means freedom.But freedom requires energy, and the right battery determines how long that energy will last. If you guess instead of calculating, you may find yourself without power sooner than expected. That’s why we recommend the following approach.

 

How to determine the right battery capacity

 

The calculation follows four simple steps:

 

List all electrical loads.
That means all 12 V devices that are regularly used in your motorhome.

 

Note the power consumption (watts) and daily usage time (hours) for each electrical load.
Rule of thumb: Power (W) = Voltage (V) × Current (A).

 

Calculate the watt-hours per day and add them together.
(Wh = watts × hours)

 

Convert the energy requirement into ampere-hours.
For a 12.8 V LiFePO4 battery, the approximate formula is: Ah = Wh ÷ 12.8 V.

From daily energy balance to the right battery size

 

In this example, the daily energy requirement is around 1,125 Wh, or just over 88 Ah, when an induction hob is included. Without the hob, it is only around 585 Wh, or 46 Ah. For one to two days of off-grid use without a full recharge, a capacity reserve of 20 to 30 percent is recommended to allow for cooler nights, longer refrigerator operating times or cloudy days with little or no solar yield.

 

Our recommendation for typical applications:

 

• Weekend trips, energy-efficient equipment without an induction hob: Traction Bull Bloc Lithium 12-75 BL

• Longer periods of off-grid use, large refrigerators, higher energy requirements or winter camping: Traction Bull Bloc Lithium LFP 12-150 BL or HF version with heating function.

Banner tip: An 1,800 W induction hob connected to a 12 V battery system via an inverter can briefly draw currents well above 140 A. This requires an adequately rated inverter, suitable cable cross-sections and appropriate fuses, for example 200 A MEGA or ANL fuses.

Why LFP technology makes the difference

• Almost fully usable capacity compared with around 50 percent for a lead-acid battery: the specified Ah capacity is available for use. More usable capacity means fewer batteries are required.


• More than 3,000 cycles at 80 percent depth of discharge, significantly more than a comparable lead-acid battery can achieve.


• Significantly lower weight combined with much higher usable capacity – a noticeable advantage when it comes to the motorhome’s payload. Once the permissible gross vehicle weight, often 3.5 tonnes, is reached, switching to lithium provides valuable additional capacity: less weight, more space and greater off-grid capability for longer stays without shore power.

• The integrated Battery Management System (BMS) provides reliable protection against overcharging, deep discharge and overheating.


• Maintenance-free and can be installed in any position.


• Despite the higher initial cost, lithium is often the more economical choice over the entire service life.

Special case – caravans: AGM is often sufficient


The situation is different for a conventional caravan. If you mainly stay at campsites with direct power, an AGM battery is generally sufficient: robust, maintenance-free and less expensive to purchase.

Lithium is particularly worthwhile here if the caravan’s payload or the towing vehicle’s permissible towing capacity is limited, as every kilogram saved counts. In both cases, it is important to use a charger that is suitable for the selected battery type, such as a Banner Accuch

A lead-acid battery cannot simply be replaced with a lithium battery without checking the entire charging system. The charger, solar charge controller and, above all, the vehicle’s alternator must support a LiFePO4 charging profile, or a charging booster must be used to regulate the charging process. This is the only way to charge the lithium battery correctly and safely. By accurately calculating your energy consumption and allowing for sufficient reserve capacity, you can determine exactly which Traction Bull Bloc Lithium battery provides enough energy for the level of freedom you want.
