REACHING YOUR DESTINATION BY BUS IN A MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY AND CLIMATE-FRIENDLY WAY

START-STOP-SYSTEM IN CITY BUSES!

In the bus sector, too, primarily in city buses in conurbations, manufacturers are working to further reduce fuel consumption, pollutant emissions and noise emissions, in some cases drastically.

This is because the diesel engine switches off at a stop thanks to the start-stop technology and the on-board power supply is safely supplied by stored energy.

How does the automatic start-stop system work in city buses?

All systems on the market have eliminated the conventional starter and replaced it with a starter generator, which is practically an electric motor (KSG = crankshaft starter generator or ISG = integrated starter generator, starter and alternator/generator are always one component). When pushing and braking, the system works as an alternator, when starting, it works as a starter (starter motor).

The starter generator is installed in the driveline between the engine and the gearbox and works in combination with starter and on-board batteries and increasingly with supercaps (capacitors). These can store and release high amounts of current extremely quickly; the electrical energy is stored here purely electrostatically. Combined with an intelligent self-learning battery energy management (BEM) that always uses the energy where it is most urgently needed.

To further optimise battery energy management, more and more GPS-based information is being integrated.

The BEM software also takes the route into account in terms of topography. A brief example: The bus compressor reports a need for energy and the compressed air supply for the brakes needs to be refilled. This information is not immediately implemented, however, and power from the batteries or capacitors is used for this purpose; the energy management system now delays the "execution of the command" for once. This is because a longer downhill stretch is coming up in a shorter distance. Only during the downhill run does the compressor start up and fill the compressed air supply. However, the energy for this often does not come from the batteries or capacitors, but directly from recuperation (=brake energy recovery). This protects the power storage units due to less cycling, because the charging and discharging processes can often be drastically reduced!

The other advantages briefly noted.

During the stop at a bus stop, the on-board network is supplied (opening and closing of the doors, ventilation/air conditioning, interior lighting, air compressor, ...), when restarting, the starter generator uses the energy of the battery(ies), furthermore, if available, the supercaps for engine start (boost function). During the journey, the diesel engine is supported with additional electric hybrid drive power.

Riding a bus means protecting the climate, conserving resources and reducing traffic!

Bus travel is one of the most environmentally friendly means of transport, whether by city bus or long-distance coach, it is more sustainable than travelling by car or plane. The eco-balance of a bus - measured by its primary energy consumption - is about 3 times better than that of a car!

With 0.006 litres of diesel per person and kilometre, the bus is clearly ahead of the car with approx. 0.018 litres of fuel - that means 3 times as much fuel consumption with the car!

Banner Batteries is in the thick of things instead of just being there.

With the powerful Buffalo Bull EFB batteries, designed for high energy requirements, maximised vibration/cycle resistance, long service life and available in the power levels 150 Ah (A-Box), 190 Ah (B-Box) and 240 Ah (C-Box).

Banner upgrade tip: In the C-Box, be sure to include the Buffalo Bull AGM battery 710 01 for maximum energy requirements!

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat): the acid is absorbed into the glass fleece and thus bound.

EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): the cycle-resistant starter battery with liquid electrolyte.

Leading commercial vehicle manufacturers already rely on the best Banner batteries from the Buffalo Bull series as original equipment.
