WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL AMBIENT TEMPERATURE?

SOME FACTS ON THE SUBJECT OF AMBIENT OR OPERATING TEMPERATURE.

As a general rule, Banner recommends an operating temperature of max. -40 to +55 degrees Celsius; optimum storage conditions are approx. +25 to +27 degrees Celsius. These criteria apply to all lead-acid batteries and are valid for conventional, EFB, AGM and GEL technology.

Since the battery is subject to the laws of chemistry and physics, the temperature of the battery has a significant influence on its characteristics. The higher the temperature, the faster chemical processes such as self-discharge take place in the battery, with massive repercussions for its service life.

Heat effect For this reason, the ambient temperature must not exceed +55 degrees Celsius. A value of +85 degrees Celsius is not uncommon in the engine compartment, especially in summer, but is considered uncritical for a maximum of 3 hours per day.

Temperature-controlled charging characteristics are used, for example, to improve the temperature behaviour of batteries in the vehicle.

Effect of cold An acid density (at +27 degrees Celsius) of 1.28 kg/l (= open-circuit voltage of conventional battery ≥ approx. 12.7 V; AGM battery ≥ approx. 12.9 V) also means an optimal starting position in terms of the freezing point.

A fully charged battery (100% state of charge) only freezes at approx. -60 degrees Celsius.

However, care must be taken with discharged batteries. If there is any water in the discharged battery, the freezing point rises to almost 0 degrees Celsius. Discharged batteries can therefore freeze and, in extreme cases, even burst. The lower limit temperature of -40 degrees Celsius must be considered in terms of the chargeability, the state of charge and, as a result, the individual freezing limit of the battery.
