CHOOSING THE RIGHT BATTERY

BATTERY TYPE

“Seek and you will find”... in order to be able to assign the right Banner battery to your vehicle,

we use extensive industry and manufacturing data. Due to the countless number of battery and vehicle models to choose from,

a few parameters should be checked before buying batteries.

Due to the countless number of battery and vehicle models, incorrect allocations cannot be completely avoided despite the extensive industry data collected.

Before buying a battery, please always compare the following parameters with the existing battery:

  • the dimensions (length x width x casing height/total height); for DIN European types, the casing height/total height is identical at 175 mm (T-/LB-casing) or 190 mm (H-/L-casing), for Asian types, there is a difference of approx. 22 mm between casing height/total height,
  • the circuit (= terminal arrangement) and the terminal design,
  • whether the base strips are necessary for fastening in your individual use case, or whether there is a bracket fastening at the top of the battery cover,
  • the battery technology (conventional, EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery)

Compare these parameters with the battery already installed, asdifferent battery sizes/technologies may be used. This primarily depends on a possible start-stop function, the additional electrical equipment (e.g. parking heater, sound system, etc.), the climatic conditions or the manufacturer's factory (= production site of the vehicle).

A note on the circuit:

There can also often be some confusion when it comes to the circuit. Remember that the battery circuit is always assessed with the terminals facing forward towards the body.

Practical example of a circuit:

Both pictures show a battery with circuit 0 (positive terminal right), this is clearly visible in Figure 1. It becomes more difficult if the battery is installed upside down. Figure 2 also shows a circuit 0 battery.

Within Europe , we’re guided by the placement of the +terminal, according to DIN or EN standards. The Japanese JIS standard is based on where the -terminal is placed; this is the fundamental difference and often leads to confusion or incorrect orders being made.

Here’s an example using the D23 battery box to make this clearer:

Power Bull P60 68 (55D23L) is an Asian type for Japanese and/or Korean cars with circuit 0, which means +terminal right = L -terminal left.
Power Bull P60 69 (55D23R) is also an Asian type for Japanese and/or Korean cars with circuit 1, which means +terminal left = R -terminal right.

Banner tip: Never install a conventional wet-cell battery in a vehicle with a start-stop function that is equipped with an EFB or AGM battery as standard. If necessary, an EFB or AGM battery must be used again here. In an identical housing and of a similar performance class.

PS: Minor deviations in capacity or performance during a cold start have no effect on the safe start and the optimum power supply of the electrical system.

VW Auto

Different names are used on the market for the start-stop technology in the battery sector:

VRLA batteries

These batteries can be replaced by the Banner Running Bull AGM *. VRLA batteries use the same technology as our Banner Running Bull AGM batteries. AGM = Absorbent Glass Mat = VRLA = Valve Regulated Lead Acid

AFB and ECM batteries

These batteries can be replaced by the Banner Running Bull EFB *. AFB and ECM batteries use exactly the same technology as our Banner Running Bull EFB batteries. EFB = Enhanced Flooded Battery = AFB = Advanced Flooded Battery = ECM = Enhanced Cyclic Mat

*PS: In an identical housing and with a similar performance class. Minor deviations in capacity or performance during a cold start have no effect on the safe start and the optimum power supply of the electrical system.

Upgrading

Upgrading from an EFB battery to an even more powerful and cycle-resistant Running Bull AGM battery is possible in housing H5/L2 (60 Ah), H6/L3 (70 Ah) and H7/L4 (80 Ah) under certain circumstances. When upgrading technology, it is essential that the new battery is configured in the system for start-stop vehicles with battery energy management systems (BEM). The Banner Battery Service Tool (BBST) is ideal for this.

These tips must be followed when changing batteries.

For vehicles with start-stop function:

You must make sure that the old battery is replaced by an equivalent battery in terms of technology, performance class and size:

  • An AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) must always be replaced by another AGM battery. In an identical housing and of a similar performance class.
PS: Minor deviations in capacity or performance during a cold start have no effect on the safe start and the optimum power supply of the electrical system.
  • An EFB battery (Enhanced Flooded Battery) is to be replaced at least by an EFB battery that’s in perfect condition or by an AGM battery. In an identical housing and of a similar performance class.

PS: Minor deviations in capacity or performance during a cold start have no effect on the safe start and the optimum power supply of the electrical system.

For vehicles without start-stop function:

More than one battery size or type of battery may have been installed during the initial equipping, depending on:

  • the additional electrical equipment (e.g. auxiliary heating, sound system, etc.)
  • the climate zone or
  • the car manufacturing plant (= production site).

If possible, it’s vital that you check the OE battery or battery currently installed in the vehicle.

Brief Banner tip: Ensure that the terminal clamps are firmly seated!

Maximum tightening torques noted again: Battery connection positive and negative terminals - max. 4 Nm.

One look at the picture is enough, oops, that must have been thoroughly misunderstood.

Not like this, no terminal connection without battery clamp!
