For constant full power and a long service life
Spring is the ideal moment for a battery check in combination with external equalisation charging. Therefore, the starter specialist Banner is pleased to provide the following key tips for extended battery life.

Leonding, 2 March 2020. Andreas Bawart, Banner’s Commercial CEO, hits the nail on the head when he states that, “Frequent short trips during distribution transports, irregular driving profiles in combination with stop-and-go traffic, daily cold starts in generally icy winter temperatures and additional electrical consumers such as seat and stationary heating in long-haul trucks all serve to gradually reduce battery energy levels.” This means that as compared to their counterparts in cars, truck batteries are discharged more frequently and therefore the Banner CEO recommends that at the latest, batteries should be recharged externally when tyres are changed in spring. Moreover, against this background, it is important that the batteries are recharged externally at least twice annually. Should this not be the case, the open-circuit voltage in a 24V vehicle electrical system, which involves two 12V batteries connected in series, may fall from 25.44V to 24.6V or even lower, with all the related negative consequences.

Seven tips for extended battery life
Full power for longer and no starting problems in winter!
How to get even better performance from your Banner battery.

1. Keep it active and on the move.
Inactive batteries start to discharge in a process during which lead sulphate forms of the battery plates and obstructs the current flow. A device like the Banner Accucharger keeps the battery in shape and prevents sulphation.   

 

2. Keep it clean.
Ensure that the surface of the battery is clean and dry using an antistatic cloth. Moisture in the engine compartment causes current creepage, which consumes energy. In addition, do not use any so-called improvement agents.

 

3. Keep it safe in winter.
Battery starting performance declines in cold weather. Therefore, in order to have sufficient power, switch off additional consumers such as blowers and the heating until the engine is running. Moreover, turn them off before shutting down the engine.

 

4. Keep it running marathons.

During short trips cars often require more energy than the dynamo can generate and recharge, which means that the battery is subject to constant discharging. Therefore, if possible take the car out for longer runs in order to charge up the battery, or even better treat your battery to an external compensatory charge using a Banner Accucharger. The environment will be most grateful.

 

5. Keep it fit for winter with an extra charge.
Frequent short trips in combination with stop and start traffic reduce the energy level of the battery during every start and drive. Give your battery an extra portion of power with external charging, especially before the first cold winter weather arrives. 

 

6. Keep your convertible in trim during hibernation.
Are you mothballing your car for the winter? If so and the battery is to stay in the vehicle, then remove the negative terminal. The battery must remain dry and cool (but frost-free). Recharge at the latest when an open-circuit voltage of 12.5V is reached. The solution for these requirements of seasonally driven cars is provided by regular compensatory charges and charge retention using a Banner Accucharger.   

 

7. Keep a Banner booster close at hand.
One thing should be noted from the outset. Namely, that in view of the sensitive electronic components in the vehicle, as a rule starting assistance should only be given by means of a Banner Booster. This is because start assistance from vehicle to vehicle can lead to voltage peaks during the disconnection of the terminals, which can damage or even destroy car electronic systems.

Battery tip: Professional handling of boat batteries
Checking, charging and storing
Our 5 tips help you learn everything you need to know about handling boat batteries.

Tip 1: Installation

Conventional wet batteries should, if possible, be installed in the boat along the longitudinal axis - this ensures greater leakage protection in extreme inclined positions.

 

Tip 2: Degassing

We prescribe the use of a degassing hose for all lead-acid batteries, which are installed in the interior/passenger compartment, mandatory. Some boat batteries are provided with a hose with attached elbow, for the discharge of the battery gases. If this applies to a boat, the hose must be inserted into the corresponding degassing opening of the battery via the elbow. If there is a degassing opening on the other side, it must be closed with a plug!

 

Tip 3: Charging

Ensure that the battery is sufficiently charged.

The next two points apply to conventional wet batteries.

- Before charging, check the electrolyte level and, if necessary, fill up desalinated or distilled water to the maximum acid level or 15 mm above the upper edge of the plate.

- The screw connections of the battery must not remain open during charging, it is best to close them again.

Attention: AGM batteries must not be opened! Refilling with distilled water is not possible or necessary.

- Observe the charging characteristics.

- Charging current should be 10% of the capacity.

- Charging voltage (at +25° C): AGM 14.40V - 14.80V constant voltage; conventional 14.4V - max. 16V

- Charging time approx. 12 - 24 hours

For AGM- and GEL-batteries please use a voltage regulated charger e.g. Banner Acchucharger (max. 14,80V)!

Fully automatic chargers with charging voltage limitation up to 14.8V are ideal for use with boat batteries. Depending on the capacity of the battery used, we recommend the following chargers:

- Batteries up to 72 Ah - Banner Accucharger 12V 3A

- Batteries up to 130 Ah - Banner Accucharger 12V 6A Recovery

- Batteries up to 230 Ah - Banner Accucharger 12V 10A Recovery

If your charger has an automatic mode with voltages >14.8V, the battery must be disconnected from the on-board electronics or removed from the boat. Please also observe the operating instructions of the boat manufacturer.

 

Tip 4: Wintering

If the battery remains installed during unused periods, you should disconnect at least one connecting cable (minus). The battery should always be kept charged, especially before and during the winter. Check the open-circuit voltage at regular intervals. Our battery tester BBT Digital Voltmeter DV1 is suitable for this purpose.

Recharge at 12.50V at the latest!

 

Tip 5: Storing

Store boat batteries in a cool (0° to 25° C) and dry place. Do not expose to direct sunlight. Ensure that the battery surface and terminals are clean.

Those needing a new battery in winter have generally made a mistake in summer.

High air temperatures cause the water in a conventional wet battery to evaporate to such an extent that the battery plates are literally dry. The battery becomes weak and fragile.

Banner professional tip:

Make a battery check, on every vehicle, in the workshop run!

 

Control for longer life.
A battery supplies energy permanently when its optimum state is maintained. With the banner test and inspection devices you can test charge conditions, voltage, the status of the battery acid and much more. This way you know immediately if and which measures are necessary to maintain full battery power.

 

Regularly check the electrolyte level in wet batteries and, if necessary, top up demineralised or distilled water to the maximum acid level or 15 mm above the upper edge of the plate.

There is no need to top up water on Banner's absolutely maintenance-free wet starter batteries (applies to Starting Bull, Power Bull/PRO and Running Bull EFB). Under normal operating conditions, no water needs to be refilled for the entire battery life of the Bull product variants mentioned above.

In case of high water loss, the controller voltage should be checked by a specialist. Never top up acid!

 

Please note with Running Bull AGM batteries:

The screw connections of the AGM batteries must not be opened! An acid density measurement or refilling of distilled water is not possible or not necessary!

What is the function of the sensor at the negative terminal of the starter battery?
The electronic battery sensor is an important part of energy management in motor vehicles. The sensor gives the car precise information about the battery status and controls the charging voltage and charging current accordingly.

The massively increased on-board currents in modern vehicle models and in particular the microhybrid applications start/stop and recuperation (=recovery) of braking energy place new demands on car batteries. More and more often, kinetic energy is also converted into electrical energy during coasting (=free rolling of the car), thus charging the battery.

 

Application and function of the sensor. Energy management continuously records parameters such as voltage, current and temperature via the battery sensor. These measured values are used to calculate important parameters such as charge status, functional status, overall battery status and a large number of other values.

 

The data is transmitted to the vehicle computer. The computer then decides on the energy balance in the vehicle and, if necessary, restricts the use of comfort consumers such as seat heating or air conditioning, deactivates the start/stop function and signals this to the driver on the display with corresponding instructions. If the alternator then recharges sufficiently, the control unit automatically reactivates all consumers and functions.

 

The customer benefit briefly noted. The primary aim is to ensure that the engine always starts and thus avoid vehicle failure. In addition, the sensor supports intelligent alternator control, which reduces CO2 emissions, saves fuel and protects the environment. If the battery no longer delivers the desired performance, "defective battery" is stored in the system and this early warning makes it possible to plan battery replacement.

Charging the car battery

 

Charging of conventional wet batteries and EFB batteries:

 

- Before charging, check electrolyte level and, if necessary, fill up desalinated or distilled water to the max. acid residue mark or 15 mm above the upper edge of the plate. The screw connections of the battery must not remain open during charging, it is best to close them again.

AGM batteries must not be opened, refilling with water is not possible or necessary.

 

- Connect the positive terminal (+) of the battery to the charging clamp (+) of the charger and the negative terminal (-) to the negative clamp (-) of the charger. Only switch on the charger after connecting the battery. Switch off the charger when charging is complete.


- A tenth of the capacity is recommended as charging current. (e.g. 44 Ah: 10 = 4.4 A charging current). With an automatic charger like the Banner Accucharger this setting happens, as the name suggests, automatically.


- Charging is complete when the current drops to 0 or no longer decreases or the automatic charger switches off. Provide good ventilation during charging. Attention: Highly explosive oxyhydrogen gas forms during charging! Fire, sparks, open light and smoking prohibited!

 

- AGM batteries must be charged with a voltage regulated charger, e.g. Banner Accucharger (max. 14.8V)!


As a general rule, fully automatic chargers (charging voltage limitation with 14.8V) are well suited for charging the battery installed in the vehicle. If your charger has an automatic mode with voltages >15.9V, the battery must be disconnected from the on-board electronics or removed from the vehicle. In the worst case the installed control units could be destroyed by overvoltages, the resulting damage would be enormous!

You can always rely on a well-maintained Banner battery, but what happens when a neighbour has starting problems? You naturally want to help and provide quick and simple assistance.
That´s how you do it right!

However, one thing should be noted from the outset. Namely, that in view of the sensitive electronic components in the vehicle, as a rule starting assistance should only be given by means of a Banner Booster. This is because start assistance from vehicle to vehicle can lead to voltage peaks during the disconnection of the terminals, which can damage or even destroy car electronic systems.

 

Therefore, it is essential that the following procedure be strictly observed when using starter cables!
– Standardised starter cables (e.g. in accordance with DIN 72 553) should always be used when giving starting assistance.
– Observe the instructions for the use of the starter cables.
– Only connect batteries with the same nominal voltage.
– When connecting the terminals, switch off both vehicle engines!
– First connect the two positive terminals (1) with (2). Then connect the negative terminal of the assisting vehicle (3) with (4), the blank metallic point on the vehicle requiring assistance, away from the battery. (Observe the instructions of the vehicle manufacturer.)
– Now start the vehicle needing assistance for a maximum of 15 seconds. Do not start the assisting vehicle.
– When disconnecting the terminals, remove the cables in the reverse sequence to the above.

 

Attention: The car battery is not always installed in the engine compartment, but can also be located in the interior/passenger compartment or luggage compartment. The procedure of the jump start remains unchanged!
