BATTERY TECHNOLOGIES

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES AND ADVANTAGES?

It doesn’t matter if it’s a car, lorry or motorboat, the battery is always needed to start the engine.

Start-stop battery or conventional battery - what are the differences between the different technologies and

and where is the best place for which battery to be used?

Conventional battery (wet-cell battery)

A conventional starter battery, as the name suggests, is basically designed for a high short-energy boost to start the vehicle. As soon as the engine is running, the vehicle's charging system makes sure that the energy taken from the battery is recharged and additionally supplies all other electrical consumers. The state of charge (SOC) is kept as close to 100% as possible.

The conventional battery has been continuously developed since it was first released over 100 years ago and is still used successfully today. The lead-acid battery is still the best compromise between reliability, robustness, recyclability and price

Start-Stopp-System

Start-stop battery

A start-stop battery is responsible for much more than just starting the engine. Namely, to supply the various electrical consumers with energy when the vehicle is stationary, the engine is not running and the full power supply of the electrical system, including the next starting process, must still be ensured.

This means that the technology and components of a start-stop battery differ significantly from those of a conventional starter battery.

The start-stop system saves fuel at every red traffic light, is easy on your wallet and is good for the environment. The automatic start-stop system automatically switches the engine off and on againwhen you step on or step off the clutch or brake during a stop.

If energy recovery is also carried out in the vehicle (recovery of braking energy), the start-stop battery works artificially at a lower state of charge (SOC State Of Charge at approx. 70%).

Our start-stop battery variants:

  • Up to 270,000 engine starts

Running Bull EFB batteries

Please note:

If a conventional wet-cell battery is installed in a vehicle with start-stop technology by mistake, due to an allocation error – or incorrect cost awareness, then a battery breakdown or total failure can happen. Depending on the driving profile (short distance, stop-and-go, etc.), a conventional starter battery will be defective  within a few months due to the extremely high cyclic load caused by the start-stop function.

A battery breakdown also leads to the failure of various vehicle functions (including start-stop).
