AGM AND EFB – 

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? 

 

Two different battery technologies are used for vehicles with automatic start-stop systems,

depending on the energy requirement and required vibration or cycle resistance.

The start-stop system was developed to reduce CO2 and fuel consumption. In addition to energy management and a battery sensor, special start/stop batteries are absolutely essential for the implementation of this system. 

 

Basically, two different battery technologies are used, depending on the energy requirement and the required vibration or cycle resistance:

  •     AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat): the acid is absorbed in a glass mat, meaning that it cannot leak
  •     EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): the cycle-resistant starter battery

  • for start-stop vehicles with the highest energy requirements and brake energy recovery
  • for middle and upper class vehicles up to luxury class

 

AGM technology (Running Bull AGM) is primarily used in start-stop systems with the highest energy requirements and brake energy recovery. Here, the Running Bull AGM battery is the perfect solution for priority with middle and upper class vehicles up to the luxury class. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is a recombination battery.

 

A glass mat separator absorbs the acid and leaves enough pores free to allow oxygen diffusion from the positive to the negative plate. At the negative plate the oxygen combines with lead to form lead oxide. This lead oxide then reacts with the sulphuric acid to form lead sulphate, whereby water is produced as a reaction product. The charge converts the lead sulphate back to metallic lead. The result is no loss of water!

However, if too much gas is produced due to charging voltages that are too high or extremely hot temperatures, not all of the gases formed can recombine fully. The pressure in the battery increases continuously until the safety valves are opened.

Here, we will briefly outline the design differences when compared to the conventional wet-cell battery:

1. Battery box with reinforced sidewalls: To record the pressure of the set installation and recombination.

2. Special screw connections: With overpressure valve to prevent the battery from bursting in the event of overcharging, for example.

3. Special AGM separators: Manufactured with highest accuracy and glass mat support, because optimum compression and saturation of the separator are two of the basic requirements for the perfect functioning of the AGM battery.

4. Higher lead content: This is necessary because there is no "acid reserve" as is the case with a wet-cell battery.

 

Unbeatable user benefits: Triple cycle strength compared to conventional starter batteries and highest vibration resistance in continuous operation. Leak-proof thanks to the fact that the electrolyte is bound in a glass mat (Absorbent Glass Mat).

 

If energy recovery is also carried out in the vehicle (recovery of braking energy), the AGM battery works artificially at a lower state of charge (SOC State Of Charge at approx. 70%). Depending on the driving profile (short distance, stop-and-go, etc.), a conventional wet-cell battery will be defective within a few months in this application due to the extremely high cyclic load.

  • for vehicles with high energy requirements and simpler start-stop systems
  • for small cars up to upper middle class

 

EFB Technology (Running Bull EFB) is mainly used for simpler start-stop systems and generally for vehicles with high energy requirements. The Running Bull EFB battery is the perfect solution for small cars up to the upper middle class.

 

The EFB battery is a further development of the conventional wet-cell battery. Special mass additives and the use of a plate scrim (mat layer) provide the active material with additional support.

 

Unbeatable user benefits: The battery reaches high vibration resistance and twice the cycle life (when compared to conventional starter batteries). Furthermore, the carbon additives lead to the charging time being significantly reduced!

 

If energy recovery is also carried out in the vehicle (recovery of braking energy), the EFB battery works artificially at a lower state of charge (SOC State Of Charge at approx. 70%). Depending on the driving profile (short distance, stop-and-go, etc.), a conventional wet-cell battery will be defective within a few months in this application due to the extremely high cyclic load.

 

PS: The EFB battery is also used in the commercial vehicle sector, especially for long-distance lorries, where maximum energy consumption is required due to increasing comfort functions and extreme vibration resistance in the case of integral rear mounting of the battery.

These tips must be followed when changing batteries:

Replacing an AGM battery

 

If a passenger car is equipped with an AGM battery as standard, it is essential to replace it with a AGM battery again. In identical housing and with a similar performance class.

PS: Minor deviations in capacity or performance during cold start have no effect on the safe start and the optimum power supply of the electrical system!

Replacing an EFB battery 

 

If a passenger car is equipped with an EFB battery as standard, it may be replaced by an EFB battery or, under certain circumstances, with a AGM battery when it is changed. In identical housing and with a similar performance class.

PS: Minor deviations in capacity or performance during cold start have no effect on the safe start and the optimum power supply of the electrical system!

Please note: 

Never install a conventional wet-cell battery in a passenger vehicle with a start-stop function that is equipped with an Absorbent Glass Mat or AGM or EFB battery as standard.
